The 3-18 Curriculum for Excellence aims to ensure that all children and young people in Scotland develop the attributes, knowledge and skills that they will need to flourish in life, learning and work.
The knowledge, skills and attributes, learners develop will allow them to demonstrate four key capacities; to be successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
Outdoor Learning is an important approach in the new Curriculum for Excellence.
The Pentland Hills Ranger Service can provide opportunities for schools to participate in enjoyable, active and challenging activities in an outdoor setting which contributes to delivering the Curriculum for Excellence.
Curriculum areas include Social Studies, Sciences and Health & Wellbeing.
Experiences in the Pentland Hills could include;
Social Studies - People, past events and societies, a class could visit Castlelaw Iron Age Fort and discover how Iron Age people lived and worked.
Sciences - Planet Earth - Biodiversity & interdependence and Processes of the Planet, a class could visit Flotterstone Glen and investigate water and water life in the Glencorse Burn or use the self led Harlaw Biodiversity Trail for around Harlaw Reservoir (copies and pencils available on request).
Social Studies - People, place and environment, a class could visit Bonaly Country Park and discover maps and explore land uses in a countryside setting
This list is just a taster of what we can offer and the Ranger Service is happy to develop visits with teachers to ensure that the experience of visiting the Pentland Hills Regional Park links directly with the Curriculum for Excellence.
