Learn how to Dyke

Two day dry stane dyking training course

This two day training course provides the practical skills and confidence necessary to repair and build dry stane dykes. The techniques and principles of dry stane dyking will be introduced to participants along with the wider considerations and knowledge of different styles of wall, stones and dry stane dykes as a landscape feature. This course will allow you to develop your own dyking skills for use in your own garden or croft or as the basis for carrying out dyking in a working environment.
Course objectives
By the end of the course participants will:
• Have gained knowledge and experience of dry stane dyking.
• Understand the correct & safe methods of using hand-tools, lifting stone and working with others when dyking
• Understand the importance of stone type, selection and technique in order to build a sound structure that will last a lifetime
• Have learnt new or developed existing practical skills and the confidence to continue using these skills for both work and personal projects
• Have a grounding in the history, functions and conservation of dry stane dykes.

No experience required.

Help survey for this beautiful but locally rare butterfly. Found only in the Edinburgh region of the Regional Park, and one of the few remaining colonies in the East of Scotland; the small colony only occupies a two hectare area.
